Article Outline
Simmons and Brinkman from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine start their editorial of family-centered rounds by pointing out that “what is new is old.” This is an amusing introduction to their insights into the resurgence of family centered rounds and highlights the results of the accompanying paper by Morris and Cameron et al concerning the effects of parental presence on pediatric intensive care unit rounds. In general, parents of patients in the PICU reported that participation in rounds increased their overall satisfaction, but there were some issues, such as a suggestion that parental presence might limit discussion, that could adversely affect patient care.
