Typical febrile seizures do not have negative cognitive impact
Article Outline
In this population-based study of intelligence testing of conscripts in Denmark and linkage of their medical records since birth in 1977 to 1983 with their conscript records, no negative cognitive effects were found in men who had a hospital discharge diagnosis of febrile seizure between 3 months and 1 year of age. This is good news for parents and the affected 2 to 4% of infants who have a history of simple febrile seizure(s). The study assessed only men, because conscription – and thus the convenience sample for prevalence of cognitive outcomes in Denmark – applies only to males. There is no reason to expect different outcomes for female infants who have simple febrile seizures.
