Teaching NRP

Article Outline

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association is used worldwide for teaching neonatal resuscitation. The program is a standard requirement for all delivery room personnel in the United States. The effectiveness of the learning of NRP and its benefits for depressed infants are likely to depend on local conditions. In this issue of The Journal, Carlo et al formally tested whether NRP training improved the skills of nurse midwives in Zambia. The NRP training did improve skills. Although this result is not surprising, it is important to know that the training is effective as such training is occurring worldwide. The questions of long-term maintenance of skills and beneficial effects for infants also need to be formally tested.
