Symptoms associated with Kawasaki disease
Article Outline
It is important to make a prompt diagnosis of Kawasaki Disease so appropriate treatment can be instituted. Unfortunately, the diagnosis is not always clear cut. In this issue of The Journal, Baker et al evaluated non-specific symptoms present in the ten days prior to the diagnosis of Kawasaki disease. They found that irritability, vomiting, and decreased fluid intake were common. Cough and diarrhea occurred in about 25% of patients. One or more gastrointestinal symptom occurred in 61%. Being aware of these non-specific symptoms, as well as the diagnostic criteria for Kawasaki disease, may lead to a more rapid diagnosis and better outcomes.
