Contemporary PCR technology enlightens viral etiology of laryngeal croup
Article Outline
In this issue of The Journal, Rihkanen et al performed a prospective study of the viral etiology of laryngeal croup in children in Helsinki over a 12-month period using contemporary PCR technology and testing for recently recognized viruses. The study confirms predominance of parainfluenza viruses and shows seasonal contribution of many other respiratory viruses, frequently in dual infections. The findings are particularly important to the development of vaccines and antiviral therapies.
