Ongoing pain during sickle cell crisis is associated with hospital admission
Article Outline
Frei-Jones et al at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas studied the factors associated with admission in 279 episodes of vaso-occlusive crisis complicating sickle cell disease. The authors found that the FACES pain scale after one dose of IV morphine showed a significant difference in score between the admitted versus the discharged patients. They suggest that sub-optimal pain relief is associated with admission.
