New rotavirus vaccines: Renewed optimism
Soon after the discovery of rotavirus (RV) in 1973, it became clear that this virus caused a significant proportion of diarrheal episodes affecting young children worldwide. This early appreciation prompted interest in developing vaccines in the 1980s and spurred investigation of unsolved issues associated with the epidemiology, molecular epidemiology, and immunology of RV infections.
