Oxygen saturation monitoring in the delivery room
Article Outline
Kamlin et al report that blood oxygen saturations can be monitored reliably during neonatal resuscitations even in very tiny infants. The results were facilitated by applying the saturation monitor probe to the infant before connecting the cable to the monitor. Their results represent a small but important step in improving resuscitation techniques for infants.
Now that there is a clear demonstration that saturation monitors can be rapidly applied and used in newborns, oxygen exposure theoretically can be titrated to an infant's needs. However, the optimal saturation changes with age after birth remain to be defined.
