Health related quality of life in cystic fibrosis

Article Outline

Health related quality of life in children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis (CF) has been studied in Australia using two surveys, one of which is specific to CF, the Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire. The health related quality of life was compared between children at the CF center and those in rural Queensland. There was a trend towards improved health related quality of life in the children living in regional Queensland compared to those followed at the center. The parents reported lower health related quality of life of their children compared to U.S. parents despite similar pulmonary function. There was also a correlation between declining pulmonary function and worse quality of life scores in the adolescent population. The reduced parent proxy quality of life scores compared to those of the children suggests a reduced perception of health related quality of life by parents for their children in the Australian families that participated in this study.
